National Pet Cancer Awareness Month

It’s an unfortunate reality that nearly everyone we know has been impacted by cancer somehow; whether it’s a family member or friend, furry or human. Pet cancer is the number one disease-related killer of cats and dogs. While this statistic may be shocking, advancements in veterinary medicine have made it possible for us to treat companion animals through surgery, radiation or even chemotherapy. Early detection is key and education is imperative.

In 2005, VPI declared November as National Pet Cancer Awareness Month to empower pet owners with knowledge about the prevalence, detection and treatment of pet cancer. This year, we’re dedicated making an even bigger impact on the fight against this disease, but we can’t do it without you.  Check out these awesome ways for you to join the cause:

VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk

The fifth annual VPI K9K Pet Cancer Awareness Walk will take place in Long Beach, California on Saturday, November 12, 2011. Pet lovers and their canine companions are invited to participate in a 3-kilometer walk around Long Beach’s Shoreline Village and Rainbow Harbor. All registration fees will be donated directly to the Animal Cancer Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer in pets and people.

Even if you can’t make it out to the event, you can still participate by creating a fundraising team or making a contribution online. Learn more about online donations or register for the event here.

New Facebook Fans = Dollar Donations

If walking isn’t quite your thing or your wallet just can’t handle another donation, you can still support animal cancer research with a click of a button! We’re making it easier than ever for pet lovers to join the cause. Throughout the month of November, simply “like” VPI on Facebook and we’ll donate $1 on your behalf to the Animal Cancer Foundation, up to $10,000. Be sure to share your good deed with fellow pet parents!
