Choking Canines
It’s possible for dogs to ingest a toy, a small object—or even food that may lead to choking. If you notice your dog behaving frantically, wheezing, trying to cough or having difficulty breathing, check his airway first to see if you can easily remove the object with your fingers. Repeat the procedure if your dog continues to display symptoms. Call your veterinary clinic immediately and let them know you’re on your way over with a choking pet.
Be Prepared In Advance! While visiting your veterinary clinic for a routine visit, ask your veterinarian to show you the proper way to perform CPR or the Hemlich maneuver on your dog so that you don’t inflict internal injury.
The American Red Cross also offers training for pet first aid.
Your Veterinarian Knows Best! Whatever the situation, if you suspect your pet is ill or injured, don't hesitate to take him to your veterinarian. The earlier the problem is identified and the appropriate treatment is started, the better the outcome will be. |
