Toxic-Free Tips
A few simple measures can prevent accidental poisoning:
- Use covered trash bins inside the house to prevent access to disposed medications, empty cleaning bottles, dental floss and food.
- Keep pets out of the garage or shed, away from oil and antifreeze leaks from cars.
- Don’t store cleaners under the sinks.
- At Christmastime, cover the tree water so pets can’t drink out of the stand. Pine needles are poisonous.
Your Veterinarian Knows Best! If you suspect your pet is ill or injured, don't hesitate to take him to a veterinarian. The earlier the problem is identified and the appropriate treatment is started, the better the outcome will be.
Provide your veterinarian with the following information:
- Name of the poison.
- How much was absorbed, ingested or inhaled.
- Your pet’s weight.
- Symptoms your pet is displaying, and if possible, his temperature.
