Hysterical Husky’s Car Leap Lands Him in the Hospital

Chelsea Brandt of Lawrence Township, N.J., and her trusty Husky “Eero” have built a strong bond as best friends and roommates since her move from Virginia. Every day after Chelsea comes home from work, she and Eero head to the dog park for fun and relaxation. However, one day their routine hit a major speed bump, when Eero got overly excited and jumped out of Chelsea’s SUV, which was traveling at more than 35 mph.

It was an average day when Chelsea arrived home and was greeted at the door by her hyper 11-month-old Husky. After settling Eero down, Chelsea prepared for her daily dog park trip by getting him settled in the back of her SUV with a dog safety hammock. After a short ride, they were nearing the park when Eero began jumping around, eventually freeing himself from the hammock. Within a few seconds, he then squeezed through a passenger side window and leaped to the pavement.

“I heard him getting riled up in the back and I was trying to calm him down,” said Chelsea. “I’m not sure if he recognized a dog or saw a squirrel, but before I could stop the car, he managed to lunge out of the window. I slammed on the breaks and saw him standing in the street in obvious pain. Thankfully, I have pet insurance with Nationwide and didn’t have to think twice about calling the veterinarian.”

When Chelsea approached Eero, he was limping and bleeding from his leg. Fearing that he was seriously injured, Chelsea immediately called her veterinarian who referenced her to an animal emergency hospital. After stitching up Eero’s leg and taking a few X-rays, the veterinarian team determined that Eero had no broken bones and just required some rest to heal up.

“I was amazed that he didn’t break anything or that he wasn’t seriously injured. He’s my rock in life; I don’t know what I’d do without him,” said Chelsea. “I’m so grateful that we’re insured through VPI. Before owning Eero, I didn’t even know pet insurance existed and after researching what Nationwide has to offer, I can honestly say that it’s been the best decision I’ve made as a pet owner.”

Since his leap of faith, Eero has made a full recovery and is back to visiting his friends at the dog park. Chelsea is still amazed that Eero was able to escape the situation with nothing more than a huge life lesson
