Cancer coverage - Dog and pet parent looking at each other

Pre-existing conditions

We’re here for your pet’s health journey. It's important to note that coverage under your pet insurance policy does not start immediately upon enrollment. There is a waiting period before your pet's coverage becomes effective. Additionally, any conditions that already exist prior to enrollment will be considered to be pre-existing and not eligible for coverage. Exclusion of pre-existing conditions is crucial to consider when signing up for a new pet insurance plan to ensure that you understand your coverage.

The impact of cancer on dogs and cats

Cancer can significantly impact the health of both dogs and cats, and the risk increases as they age. It is crucial for pet owners to provide regular veterinary check-ups as these are key in detecting the disease early and accessing advanced treatments. Here are several additional considerations about cancer in your pets.

  • Dogs: About 25% of dogs will develop cancer in their lifetime, with risks increasing significantly after age 10. Annually, approximately 6 million new cancer diagnoses are made among dogs in the U.S., with breeds like Golden Retrievers, Boxers, and Bernese Mountain Dogs showing higher incidences due to genetic predispositions.
  • Cats: Roughly 20% of cats are affected by cancer, with lymphoma being the most common type. Cats often hide their symptoms, making early detection and comprehensive coverage essential.
  • Survival rates: Survival rates for pets with cancer have significantly improved thanks to advances in veterinary oncology. Early detection and treatment can lead to successful outcomes, achieving remission rates of over 60% depending on the cancer type and stage.

Common types of cancer in dogs & cats

Unfortunately, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in dogs and cats, especially older pets. Among the common types of cancers that affect both dogs and cats are:

It's heartbreaking to see our beloved pets suffer from these diseases. We recognize the emotional and financial toll this takes on families and aim to provide comprehensive coverage for all these types of cancers so your pet has the best chance at survival.

Managing the cost of pet cancer treatments

Treating cancer in pets can be financially daunting, as costs for diagnostics and treatments like MRIs, chemotherapy, and surgery can quickly escalate into thousands of dollars. The cost for cancer treatment for dogs and cats depends on the type of cancer, and the treatment or surgery needed. Fortunately, our pet insurance may cover on average between 50% to 80% of these expenses, depending on the specifics of the policy. This coverage, which kicks in after the deductible and co-insurance is met, makes necessary treatments more accessible and affordable. By choosing comprehensive pet insurance that covers cancer, owners ensure their pets receive the care they need for a better quality of life while protecting themselves from overwhelming medical bills.

Please note - any condition (including cancer) that began or was contracted, manifested, or incurred before the effective date of this policy or during any waiting period, whether or not the condition was discovered, diagnosed, or treated is considered to be pre-existing and will not be covered.
